Tennessee Fire Fatalities

36 Deaths resulting from fire in Tennessee for 2008

The numbers used in these tallies are based on fire-related fatalities that are reported in the news.  Unfortunately, not all fire deaths make news headlines.  For example, one December news story reported 25 fire deaths in the city of Memphis for 2006; only 14 made headlines.  "Official" fire fatality numbers are not yet available for the years that are listed (2003 is the most current list available from the State Fire Marshal's website).  Therefore, in effort to grasp some sort of "real-time" picture of the State's fire problem, we are left to compare the current year's media-reported deaths with the previous year, and try to gauge the effectiveness of the prevention effort based on those numbers.
